I saw this one quite some time ago while at the beach. Yes this fine specimen is but a stone’s throw from lapping waves. However it wasn’t till today that I got around to photoshop.. er I mean record it’s image on my mobile cam.
The challenge for you walking catalogs of military details is to tell me what this is. Because, you see, I don’t know. There is a plaque which I will show later but it’s not of the tell stupid onlooker what this is kind. I rather suspect this is going to be in the too easy basket for some of you.
I begin with the John perspective which is hopefully obscure enough to challenge at least a few of you.

You would hit me on a morning where I have to run to some “honoring someone for something” breakfast and can’t dawdle.
And, yes, I admit I don’t know my AFV i.d. by handles, so it could be either an artillery piece or a pre/early WWII vehicle of some sort. Awful lot of rivets for later.
I will search diligently after this event this morning, and before the afternoon-spent-briefing-the-project.

So, this wouldn’t by chance be one of the guns at North Fort, would it?

OOh OOh!
Well, I’d venture it’s one of the track controls from an Amtrack.
Or not…..

Good Lord, don’t let Maggie see it…

That’s a possibility, Tim.
HFS – gutterminded wench, aincha?

now I’m thinking along the same lines as Tim. looks like the left side lateral control for a smallish tracked vehicle.
my original thought was that it could also be a winch control.

Aaron – izzit one of these?

Woohoo my John perspective is working. Don’t worry I will post up a much easier image in time.
North Fort, Amtrack, I don’t even know what they are.
I will say for the benefit of all this is not what John linked a picture of.

Looks like the brake control on an old steam loco/electric trolley or the clamp control on a cable tram car but assuming it is a turret, it would be the cam lock to hold it from turning.

I am happy to assure everyone this is definitely military.
04/03/2009 at 2:23 pm Permalink
Now you know the power of controlling the image!
I have some other guesses, but since they’re guesses, I’m gonna wait for the next hint.
You have learned the milieu well, weedhopper!

Oh, and North Fort is where the Australian Artillery Museum is.

It’s a curling iron handle. DUH!!
05/03/2009 at 3:28 am Permalink
Oh, and RetRsvMike…. are you sure you didn’t mean “wench” control? I’m pretty sure that’s where HF6 was heading with that Maggie comment.
*runs away*

Well, I had thought perhaps it might be one of the track control handles for a Bren Carrier, but then I realized they’d be on the wrong side. But it still has that robin’s egg green colour that the Commonwealth loves to use, so i suspect it’s of that manufacture.
So, yeah… about that next pic…

Cocking lever Borfors 37mm or 40mm AA GUN?

This is what the cockpit of the F35 will look like after Obama’s budget cuts have gone through.

wench control?
impossible. can’t be done.
hence the designation “wench”.

Looks like a hand-brake for a towed artillery piece.
Since this is an Oz (i.e. British-derived) thingy, and I don’t have a lot of images to hand except WEAPONS An International Encyclopedia From 5000 B.C. to 2000 A.D. (The Diagram Group), I’ll go out on a limber (heh) and say it’s the hand-brake for a British 25-pounder Mk2.
